OpenClaw is everywhere… maybe even in your own operations, right now. From international news headlines to heated GitHub threads and security briefings inside enterprise IT teams, the open-source AI agent formerly known as Clawdbot has become one of the most talked-about technologies in the industry. 

What began as an experimental personal AI agent quickly Hulked out into a global debate about autonomy, security, and the future of software.

For MSPs, VARs and IT consultancies, this isn’t just another trend. OpenClaw has become a major topic of debate in boardrooms and Slack channels alike. 

Whether clients are asking how to create a personal AI assistant, exploring how to produce an AI agent internally, or wondering if they should ban these tools outright, the decision-making wheels are already turning.

MSPs were already preparing for agentic AI—but just as ChatGPT marked a breakthrough, so OpenClaw has opened the world’s eyes to the potential, and the risks, of this rapidly evolving technology.

For managed service providers and IT consultancies, this is a tectonic shift in how clients will expect automation, support workflows, and even internal tooling to work over the next 24–36 months.

Let’s explore the terms, the technology, and what MSPs should do about it all.

What is Clawdbot and why it blew up

Search “what is Clawdbot” or “Clawdbot GitHub” and you’ll find the origin story of what has become the OpenClaw project, an open-source autonomous AI assistant that can connect to messaging platforms, read and act on commands, and execute tasks without constant prompts.

In plain terms, think of it as a personal AI agent that doesn’t just reply with text—it acts. It can automate workflows, read your inbox, integrate with Slack or Teams, manage scripts, and even schedule tasks on your behalf. For some early users, it even felt like a prototype of the long-hyped “digital assistant that actually does things”.

OpenClaw became a beacon for people trying to create their own AI assistant or wondering how to create a personal AI assistant capable of autonomous tasks. Its GitHub repo quickly became one of the most starred in history, and led to a broader ecosystem of plugins, extensions, and agent networks.

What is a GitHub repo?

A repository, or “repo” for short, is the basic building block of GitHub. Think of it as a project workspace where all the files related to a piece of software live. It stores the code, supporting documents, and the full revision history of every file, allowing developers to track changes over time.

Repositories can be shared with collaborators, making it easier for teams to work on the same project, review updates, and manage development together. Depending on how they’re configured, repositories can be public (open for anyone to view), private (restricted to specific users), or internal within an organization.

From a technical perspective, the idea of an agent workspace—a runtime environment where agents execute actions with defined permissions—is where the real innovation sits. Rather than simple chat, agents can interact with APIs, trigger scripts, store and recall context, and chain tasks together.

Lessons from builders: what it’s actually like to build an agent

Jason Cyr, VP of Design at Cisco, has written on Medium about building a personal AI agent “from zero code to autonomous system.” Cyr describes how he built an agent that could access his Google Docs, update spreadsheets, send Slack messages, and even evaluate its own outputs—all without traditional programming.

The lesson for MSPs is not just that it works, but that these tools are accessible. Cyr found that:

“The future doesn’t belong to people who can code. It belongs to people who can think clearly about problems and communicate effectively about solutions.”

He maps out how things will quickly change:

·  Command interfaces will become primary (voice, text, natural language)

·  Traditional UIs will become secondary (for complex configuration, visualization)

·  Integration depth will be table stakes (systems that don’t play well with others will lose)

What this means for MSPs is that clients—even non-technical ones—will soon expect similar capabilities: tools that reason and act, not just tools that answer.

Security realities: a cautionary counterweight

Of course, it’s not all Champagne and roses. The security implications of these autonomous systems have become impossible to ignore.

Microsoft security researchers explicitly warned that running OpenClaw (the successor to Clawdbot) on “standard personal or enterprise workstations” carries serious security risks, because these agents require broad access—including credentials, local files, messaging platforms, and APIs—and can maintain persistent access over time.

In other words, without strong isolation and governance, an agent that’s designed to automate tasks could become a liability. One tech security researcher put it bluntly: “Your front door is wide open… API keys and login credentials are stored as plain text files” on many agent installations, and attackers can exploit hidden commands (prompt injection) to manipulate the agent into doing things users never intended.

Independent security analyses of the wider ecosystem around OpenClaw and Moltbook have identified real-world issues such as exposed API keys, prompt injection vulnerabilities, lack of sandboxing for “skills,” and even database breaches that allowed unauthorized access to agent sessions.

This isn’t theoretical. Meta reportedly banned OpenClaw from workplace devices after reports of an agent deleting a researcher’s inbox, and Cisco’s own security team called the experience “an absolute nightmare”.

For MSPs, this creates both risk and opportunity. Clients will want secure, managed environments for any agentic AI capability they permit on corporate networks, but get it wrong and rogue assistants could cause chaos.

How MSPs can harness agentic AI

So where does this leave MSPs and IT consultancies who want to stay ahead of the curve instead of being disrupted by it? There are at least four areas that matter now:

1. Secure agent deployment for clients
Agents like OpenClaw are fundamentally different from traditional RMM or patching tools. They require governance, credential management, sandboxing, and monitoring. MSPs that offer agent workspace governance and supervised deployment with secure credential vaulting can position themselves as trusted partners for clients exploring this space.

2. Internal automation
Not every agent needs to run in a client environment. MSPs can use autonomous agents internally for things like ticket triage, automated reporting, log analysis, and routine remediation tasks, smoothing internal processes and saving time.

Deploying autonomous systems means governing what they can do. MSPs can productize policy templates, approval workflows, and audit trails that help clients adopt custom AI assistant capabilities responsibly.

Whether clients want to create their own AI assistant or integrate agents into business processes, MSPs can charge for advisory services, implementation roadmaps, and integration support—especially for enterprises that lack in-house AI expertise.

Real examples of agentic workflows

These are testing times, and they’re times for testing: here are workflows could experiment with:

  • Automated ticket triage and enrichment: agents read incoming tickets, extract context from logs, and draft responses.
  • System and patch verification agents: agents periodically check compliance and configuration drift, and trigger alerts or approved remediations.
  • Documentation agents: agents summarise change logs, generate runbooks, and transform engineers’ notes into structured documentation.

These are the types of tasks that move well beyond static RMM rules into more flexible, conversational automation—agents that act on intent rather than on conditions.

Balancing innovation with risk

As much promise as autonomous AI agents hold, they also require new disciplines.

Security needs to shift from treating AI as a human-instructed service to treating autonomous agents like applications with identities, granular permissions, and defined life cycles. Misconfiguration isn’t just inconvenient—it can expose credentials, violate compliance, or lead to data loss.

That’s why MSPs must think in terms of agent lifecycle management: how agents onboard, authenticate, act, escalate, and decommission.

The future of AI agents for MSPs

Tools like OpenClaw are a pathfinder—not an endpoint—for AI agents. They signal a new class of automation where AI doesn’t only help you think—it operates on your behalf.

The rise of platforms like Moltbook (an AI-only social network hosting millions of autonomous agents) indicates how quickly this ecosystem can expand—for better and for worse.

For MSPs, the opportunity lies in shaping how these systems are deployed, secured, integrated, and monetised. Above all, it’s about implementing custom AI assistant solutions that deliver value with trust.
